Biography

Dr. Vedran Džihić is currently a Senior Researcher at OIIP – the Austrian Institute for International Affairs, Co-Director of the Center for Advanced Studies, South East Europe and Assistant Professor at the Institute for Political Sciences, University of Vienna. He has been an Austrian Marshall Plan Fellow and is currently non-resident Senior Fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations, School of Advanced International Studies, John Hopkins University, Washington D.C. Dzihic teaches MA courses in Human Rights and  Balkan-Studies at the University in Vienna. He is author of 4 monographs and editor/co-editor of a further 14 volumes, furthermore he is also the author of numerous chapters, scholarly articles (in journals like Nationalities Papers, East European Politics and Society, Southeastern Europa, JEMIE, Europe-Asia Studies, L’Europe en formation, Südosteuropa, Foreign Policy in Dialogue, etc), policy papers and op-eds on various topics. He has been invited to more than 200 conferences and talks in the USA, China, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Estonia, Turkey, Switzerland, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Slovakia, Rumania, Bulgaria, and Belgium. His interviews and media contributions have appeared on  (among others) Der Standard, Die Presse, ORF, Frankfurter Rundschau, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, CICERO, WDR, Deutsche Welle, the Voice of America, the Los Angeles Times, US Today, BBC, Oslobodjenje, Slobodna Bosna, Dani, BHTV1, Radio, Slobodna Evropa, Tanjug, Danas, Politika, Novi List, HRT, Koha Ditore, Zeri, El Mundo, the Yomiuri Shimbun, Euro Observer, etc. Recently, he published a monograph on Bosnia-Herzegovina in German: Ethnopolitik in Bosnien-Herzegowina: Staat und Gesellschaft in der Krise (Nomos-Verlag, Baden-Baden 2010); co-edited a book in English Conflict and Memory: Bridging Past and Future in (South East) Europe together with Ambassador Wolfgang Petritsch (2010); and co-edited two books in 2012 in cooperation with Brookings Institutions Press and the Center for Transatlantic Relations, SAIS, Washington DC: Unfinished Business. The Western Balkans and the International Community, together with Dan Hamilton, and Looming Shadows. Migration and Integration at a Time of Upheaval. European and American Perspectives, together with Thomas Schmidinger. Dzihic received his MA and PhD with honors from the University of Vienna.
