Biography

Álvaro de Vasconcelos is an Associate Senior Researcher at the Arab Reform Initiative where he directed several projects related to the comparative analysis of democratic transitions. He is also the Steering Committee Coordinator of the Global Governance Group (GG10). From 2014 to 2015, he was visiting professor at the Institute of International Relations of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. From 2007 to 2012, he was Director of the European Union Institute for Security Studies in Paris. He co-founded the Instituto de Estudos Estratégicos e Internacionais (IEEI) in Lisbon in 1981 and was its director until 2007. He was co-founder and coordinator of the Euro-Mediterranean Network EuroMeSCo. He has written and edited numerous books, articles and reports. He edited and coordinated: What do Europeans want from NATO? EUISS Report nº 8, November 2010 and the EUISS /ESPAS Report Global Trends 2030 – Citizens in an Interconnected and Polycentric World. His book, La vague démocratique arabe – L’Europe et la question islamiste, was published in 2014. He is the author of the ARI Report Scenarios for a Peace Mission for Syria , 2014.

Álvaro de Vasconcelos is a Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honor (France) and Comendador do Ordem do Rio Branco (Brazil).
