Marija Ignjatijević joined the BCSP team in 2016 as an intern with an interest in contributing to the improvement of the transparency and accountability of security sector institutions and the reorientation of security from the political to the human sphere. Since September 2017, Marija has worked as a researcher monitoring the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, as well as the country’s defence policies and international military cooperation. In addition to this, she has interests in violent extremism in the Western Balkans and National Assembly oversight of the Serbian security sector. Since autumn 2018, she has led the BCSP internship programme and coordinated the work of volunteers at the Belgrade Security Forum. Prior to joining the BCSP, Marija spent eight months at the European Institute for Security Studies in Paris, on scholarship from the European Fund for the Balkans, where her research focused on violent extremism in the Western Balkans. She has also collaborated with the European Western Balkans web portal, where she principally covered topics relating to security. Marija has completed a bachelor’s degree in international affairs at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade, and a master’s degree in international relations and European studies at the Central European University in Budapest.
