Alenka Bratušek is a Member of the National Assembly of Slovenia and party president of Zavezništvo, Slovenia’s Alliance of Social-Liberal Democrats. Between 2013 and 2014, Bratušek served as the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia. Upon assuming this position, she faced a difficult public financial situation. Economic indicators were extremely poor, economic growth was in decline at a rate of 4,6%, interest on government bonds was almost 7%, and 130,000 people were unemployed. The actions of Bratušek’s government kept Slovenia out of bankruptcy. Beginning in 2004 she led the Directorate for the Budget at the Ministry of Finance, managing the state budget, the financing of local communities and the absorption of European funds in Slovenia. From 2007 and 2008 she participated in the preparations for the presidency of the European Union and within the broader working group for the presidency, she led a sub-group for the budget.
